Whats the difference in getting a dedicated server space60$/month vs. a hosting plan for 5$ permonth?

Im looking at getting a website domain but what do i need after that? I see virtual servers, dedicated servers and then there are hosting plans which are cheaper than anything, but what is a hosting plan?

  1. Don't buy a domain, lot of hosting companies give you free domain, if you host with them. hosting servers are normally shared. So a company can host anywhere from 1 - thousand's of domains on one server. Virtual Servers: Hosting company will partition a server disk and create it exclusively for you, so that disk will actually act as a server by itself. Dedicated server: An entire server just dedicated for you, no other domains on it, no virtual memory sharing with any other customers of the comapny. its like having your own server, but its not at ur house.
  2. You need a domain (www.whatever.com) and a hosting plan to host it on. Domain names are cheap...around $3-$10 dollars a year depending on who you buy it from. Hosting is more expensive. This service gives you a computer to place your files on and "serve" your website. Shared hosting is most likely what you are looking for. This means you share the computers resources with others using the service and you get a portion of the hard drive space and bandwidth. These plans are very affordable and some even free. Plans range from $3-$40 a month generally. Dedicated hosting is for sites that require its own server with no other accounts on it. This is for websites that need the whole computer's resources and bandwidth. These plans can be around $90-$200 a month. -- Alex
  3. You only need a dedicated server if you plan on getting a lot of traffic. For most sites the shared hosting is perfect. You can get a domain for $1.99 at http://www.dakotawebhosting.com when you sign up for hosting. I think it's like $5 or $6 a month.
