Web Hosting for informative sites only?

Am i right to say that those web hosting that are free or cheap by comparison are mostly for informative websites only. And if i needed one to sell/ do transactions that involve shipping and credit card, i will need to pay more monthly fees to buy a merchant solution from Yahoo, godaddy and such? Thanks!
