I need a web Domain. What are important factors to consider? Which domain registry company do you recommend?

I am interested to buy a domain name. There is a price difference between different companies. Is that matter the company with whom I register the domain?

  1. No, you're buying the domain from ICANN, whoever you use as your 'retailer'. (A 16 ounce bottle of Pepsi is the same, no matter where you buy it, even if the prices vary.) About the only factors to consider are: Don't buy the domain name from the same company that's going to do your hosting. Buy it from an accredit registrar. (http://www.icann.org/en/registrars/accredited-list.html ) If it's for a business, you might want to buy the .com, .net and .org versions of the name, so a competitor doesn't steal those customers who can't remember your tld. @CDGriffin: The question was about domain names, not hosting.
  2. The reason you do not want to purchase your domain name under the company that host your website is because if the hosting company goes down, or you go through trouble with them (even if you pay on time and stay up to date with them), they can hold your domain name hostage. I've had a domain name on me stolen from a hosting company and almost didn't get it back, and this was a domain name I had for 7 years now and was listed on all the major search engines. I contacted ICANN and eventually they got it back for me. Remember, whenever you purchase things through the web, especially website/domain name related material, you can contact ICANN if someone tries to steal a domain name off of you or anything. ICANN are like the police of the internet; they are a government appointed organization for stopping crime on the internet and they work worldwide. I think GoDaddy is the most reliable place for you to buy a domain name. GoDaddy has a nice interface as well, for managing your domain name including parking it, pointing the name servers to your hosting company, and so on. Domain names for the top domains (.com, .org) are roughly $10-20 dollars. There is no such thing, either, as a free domain name, however, if you do some googling you may be able to find coupon codes to get some money knocked off when purchasing. I also recommend, if this is a long term commitment to a website, to purchase a domain name that last a few years. If your domain is good for 4 years, you will not have to worry about updating it for a long time and usually it's cheaper as well. I hope this advice helps you out. Buying a domain is not that big of deal, just ensure you buy it from an ICANN accredited business so your domain name cannot be stolen.
  3. Register a domain that is catchy, SEO friendly, and easy to remember. GoDaddy offers domain registrations and Web hosting. http://www.godaddy.com
