Where do I go to register a cheap domain name without hosting? I want to secure the name while its available?

When I do a search, ultimately I end up with a hosting company. I haven't decided on a host yet but I want to secure the domain name while I can. Its my understanding that if you get a free domain with a host. That it basicaly belongs to the host. If you decide you want to go somewhere esle you can't take the name with you. I am also looking into having a ecommerce site designed. Thought I would try a freelance designer thinking I could keep the price reasonable. Any tips?

After experience in this my advice to you is to wait until you have all your eggs in a row.. or is it chickens.. no sorry, DUCKS in a row and all your eggs in a basket before you venture out and get the domain. I too was quick to want to secure a name while it was available, and did so, while i was still trying to get my website designed and the rest of the finer details in order. The bottom line is it is not WORTH it. You cannot and will not get a LEGITIMATE domain for FREE. You can go to lots, okay TONS of places on the web and get yourself a domain name. That isn't going to be a problem. That will mean nothing to anyone in the long run and it will prove useless. Be patient and you will get your name and your business will be up and running in no time if you know what your doing.
