Best design for a crawling web service? I'm developing a web service which returns the latest stock prices on a market. I've no access to the stock data. Instead I chose to scrap a HTML page to generate the data. At present my web service will do this scrapping whenever accessed. There is a performance flaw on this approach. The traffic of my hosting server shoots up for each of the service invocation. So I've two solutions to cut down the traffic. 1. Using a windows service that scraps the source HTML page in regular intervals and update a database, which will be read by the web service whenever invoked and returns the updated stock price. 2. Make the web service to update the database after scraping the HTML page, so that requests in next 10 minutes (or so) will get the data from the database, rather than scrapping the HTML page for every request. For an user base of say 100, what will be optimal solution and why? Can you suggest a good choice for me? The scraping operation is not a junk one. It is fast. Chilly Domains - web hosting, has anyone else had problems with them? Last August I was looking for a cheap hosting solution for a one page website, and chose these cowboys. I have never been able to upload a single page to my alloctated domain, and each time I emailed them I was informed. 'Our engineers have rectified the problem.' I want to have something looks like the following: It is similar to a mailing-list, except that only me, as the administrator can send out mass-emails to the subscribers, i.e. it is a one way communication. The recipients are passive receivers. When the subscribers subscribe to the mailing-list, they will enter some of their personal information. Among the personal information are some key words. These keywords are used for my search. When I send out some emails, I will first search relevant keywords, and send out emails only to those selected recipients...How do I do this? What kind of technical solutions are available to me? I am mostly looking for some existing tools and hopefully the solutions are simple to use -- because I am a green hand and have not been doing web-hosting stuff before. Basically, I have no idea about how to set up a server, etc. So I am hoping that there are easy and existing solutions that can help me. Hopefully they are free. I can give up the search part.

Why should I buy Yahoo Business Mail if it takes three hours for customer service to answer the phone?!? Why can't Yahoo manage their customer service calls? Do they not have a call center? Is there a web application that I can buy that has the same basic functionality as WebEx? I've looked at a lot of remote control applications and many that are web-based that do not require the installation of a server/client charge a monthly fee. I've seen various scenarios that people have put together using ReverseVNC, etc. But I'm looking for something very simple - where the client logs into a website or goes to a particular web page from their network - and then I on the outside login to a similar or same website/webpage and gain remote control of their computer... I am not interested in paying monthly fees. I simply want to buy the ActiveX or whatever module/programming is required and move on... I am looking for something that is strictly web-based so please do not offer solutions that involve the installation of client or host software. It's very surprising to me that no one appears to be giving WebEx a run for their money. Their product model is so simple and yet so many software developers appear to overlook the huge benefits of a web-based solution.
